Academia and Innovation
The universities have always been a major driving force when it comes to knowledge and innovation. Consequently, knowledge-intensive industries have often emerged in their vicinity. Academia in Israel is considered among the most prominent in the world, leading in terms of the number of people who have higher education (43% of the adult population), in terms of the number of researchers relative to the size of the population (6:1,000), and in terms of the level of investment in research at universities, as a percentage of GDP.
At present, more than one-third of the academic institutions in Israel are located in Greater Tel Aviv and a attended by roughly one-third of all B.A. students in the country. This is in addition to about 2,500 foreign students every year. There is no doubt that Tel Aviv’s standing as an Israeli and global academic center has a direct impact on the city’s human capital and results in a considerable spillover of knowledge, entrepreneurship and innovation.
